Worship at Mount Calvary
It’s amazing how different people are from one another. For example, think of how many people sit on a MTC bus every day on the way to work. Nowadays, with many people listening to i-pods, just imagine how many different types of music are being played on that one bus. Rock. Country. Classical and jazz to name only a few. Now, contrary to what people may think, all are to be considered music and all are worthy of being appreciated – especially when it’s done “right” and well.
One of the best things about this great country is that we are free to worship. However, what makes this country even better is that we also have the right to – not only attend worship – but we also have the opportunity to worship as we so choose. In other words, when it comes to worshipping, “the world is our oyster.” In still other words, if you like screaming guitars and clapping your hands – you can find it. If you like waving your arms and yelling: “Amen” – you can find it. If you like having things be done like they were done 50 years ago – you can find it.
If you like having no liturgy or not knowing what to expect next Sunday – you can find it. So – to that point – what will you find if you decide to attend Mount Calvary Lutheran Church? Confession and Absolution. A couple of lessons – a psalm and the gospel for the day. At least three hymns sung – accompanied by the organ and occasionally by the piano. A church choir. A bell choir. A sermon. An offering. Prayers of the church. The Lord’s Prayer, etc.
In other words, we’re pretty traditional around here. Not because we don’t appreciate or like what is considered to be contemporary and the like. Instead, this is what we have chosen to be. Now, to be fair, we are not stuck in the past. Rather, we like to think of it as taking some of the really good stuff from the past and mixing it in with the good stuff of today. Yet, when all is said and done – compared to a lot of what’s out there – we are traditional.
In that vein, a couple of years ago when a young couple joined Mount Calvary the following comment was made: “We both grew up in Lutheran congregations – one of us in Worthington and the other in Waseca. Actually, this congregation reminds us a lot of home congregations. Except it’s a little bit cooler.” That may have not been in our mission statement for Music and Worship – but we’ll take it.
To be sure, the best way for you to see what we’re like is to come and worship with us. Granted, one size does not fit everybody. But – who knows – we just may be the perfect fit for you.
